Early on November 9, a fire outside a City of Tacoma facility on the 1200 Block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way caused damage to fiber optic lines, temporarily interrupting service for several local Public, Educational and Government (PEG) channels, including University Place TV (UPTV).
UPTV’s signal travels from the Rainier Communications Commission (RCC) to the TV Tacoma master control before reaching cable playback on both Comcast (Xfinity) and LightCurve (Rainier Connect). Because the fiber damage occurred along this shared route, the outage is directly affecting UPTV as well as other PEG channels that use the same setup.
The other impacted channels include TV Tacoma, Tacoma Public Schools, Pierce County TV, CityPost and Bates Technical College TV.
While cable service is currently unavailable, viewers can still watch UPTV programs online via our YouTube channel @UniversityPlaceTV. We will provide updates here as soon as we have a timeline for when service will be restored.
