Highlighted Incidents
Incident: Commercial Burglary – Location: 2100 Mildred St W
Officers responded to a burglary that occurred overnight at Dairy Queen. Video surveillance showed a truck was used to breach the front door of the business. Multiple occupants exited the truck and entered the business. A safe was stolen. A PCSD Forensic Technician responded to assist officers in processing the scene.
Incident: Commercial Burglary – Location: 7100 27th St W
Officers responded to a burglary that occurred overnight at Cheers West. Unknown suspect(s) smashed the front glass door to gain entry to the business. The means of breaking the door/window was unknown. A cash box was taken with an unknown amount of money. The business declined a response from PCSD Forensics.
Incident: Agency Assist – Location: Cirque/Orchard
Officers responded to assist PCSD with a vehicle pursuit. UPPD was not actively involved in the pursuit but assisted with traffic control at the conclusion of the pursuit. The driver was arrested and booked on multiple charges (Assault 1/Felony Eluding/DUI/Hit & Run/Resisting Arrest).
Incident: Aggravated Assault – Location: 6400 Chambers Creek Rd W
Officers responded to a shooting near the entrance to Kobayashi Park. It was believed an altercation occurred over a cell phone. Officers were able to provide medical aid to the victim who was in stable condition. The suspect fled in a vehicle prior to law enforcement arriving on scene. The involved individuals were from out of state and did not have known connections to University Place. PCSD Detectives responded to assist with the investigation.
Several hours later there was a second report of shots being fired in the park. Officers responded and recovered multiple shell casings. Several individuals were contacted near the park and briefly detained. Officers did not contact any victims, suspects, or witnesses.
Incident: Vehicle Collision – Location: 3100 Lemons Beach Rd W
Officers were dispatched to a single vehicle collision. The vehicle left the roadway and travelled over the cliff. West Pierce Fire and Rescue (WPFR) arrived on scene and assisted the driver with exiting the vehicle and climbing back up to the road. WPFR transported the driver to the hospital.
Incident: Stolen Vehicle/Hit and Run – Location: 9200 Day Island Bridge Rd W
Officers responded to a suspicious vehicle with a driver who was slumped over. The vehicle was stolen and fled when contacted by officers. The vehicle continued to flee after striking property at multiple locations. The driver was taken into custody moments later in Lakewood (by Lakewood Police Department). The arrestee was taken to a local hospital to be processed for DUI and treated for injuries related to the collision. The arrestee fled from hospital security while still in handcuffs. Members from PCSD’s Special Investigations Unit were later able to locate, arrest, and book the individual.

Members of our team participated in the Pierce County Safety Summit on Aug. 3. The event was hosted by Pierce County Emergency Management and was filled with valuable training and collaboration on school safety.
We will report back with results after our next Shoplifting Emphasis which is scheduled during the week of Aug. 21.
