Mail Theft in U.P. is on the Rise

University Place Police reports they are seeing an uptick in mail thefts. Please take a moment to read the following reminders about how to avoid mail theft/identity fraud.

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing consumer crime scams today and University Place is no exception. Mail theft is one way citizens can become victims of identity theft. It leads to credit card fraud, check forgeries, obtaining services in your name, and a variety of other crimes using your identity. 

Guard your mail from theft. Deposit outgoing mail in post office collection boxes or at your local post office. Promptly remove mail from your mailbox after it has been delivered. If you are planning to be away on a short trip or vacation, simply go to to place a hold on your mail while you are away – or ask a trusted friend or neighbor to collect your mail for you.

It is imperative that citizens take action to protect their mail and reduce their exposure to identity theft. There are several ways to do this but the very best and most comprehensive way is to obtain and install a locking mailbox.
